On a recent blog post, a lovely visitor asked me how I had achieved my blog layout.
Well, I confess at first I couldn't remember how I had done it! I remember googling round for ages to try and figure out how this layout could be achieved in Blogger, but after scooting round in the design section it has all come back to me. I've decided that for Jaye's benefit and hopefully to help someone else as well I would write a clear, easy to follow guide to add this layout to your own blog.
Step One
Go into your Blogger settings, where you check on your Stats etc. and click on the Pages option in the left hand menu.
Decide what labels you want at the top of your page - they need to be one word so you can easily put a seach link in for them.
Step Two
"How did you get the other pages to show all posts under a certain label?
I'd love to do that with mine but can't figure it out!"

Step One
Go into your Blogger settings, where you check on your Stats etc. and click on the Pages option in the left hand menu.
Decide what labels you want at the top of your page - they need to be one word so you can easily put a seach link in for them.
Step Two
To add the Pages, use the 'New Page' option and select 'Web Address: Send Readers to another web address'.
Put your desired label in the 'Page Title' box and then add the web address for searching your blog for that tag. In this case the formula is 'http://BLOGNAME.blogspot.com/search/label/CHOSENWORD'.
Step Three
Once you have added as many labels as you want and made sure you have selected the option to show the labels as 'top tabs', you need to check that your search is picking up the right posts.
To do this, you need to make sure that your corresponding label is flagged up as a tag on the relevant post. For example, for my recent Great Garden Moments post, I wanted the post to be picked up by people who clicked the 'Gardening' label at the top of my blog. Therefore, I had to make sure that 'gardening' was one of my tags for that post, as per this picture:
Summary
* Use the Pages option to choose your labels.
* Set the Pages up as a search link for your blog.
* Make sure the relevant blog posts have that search term in the tags.
Does that make sense? I hope that is a useful explanation!

This was useful thank you!

DeleteHello, thanks for the tutorial :) I was wondering if you knew a way to add more than one CHOSENWORD e.g put commas or forward slashes between them so that each page could pull up posts with different tags? Would be super appreciative of any advice you could give thank you
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much either im stupid or i dunno but how do i get all my reviews posted in my top bar where it says reviews for some reason they are all popping up on my side labels there but i cant get them on the top labels
ReplyDeleteHmm, have you got 'review' in the tags/labels for each of the relevant posts?
ReplyDeleteAll I get is javascript when I try to link to my labeled pages? What did I do wrong? I entered the page address and have the corresponding tags.
ReplyDeleteI am also only receiving a Javascript error when I enter the web address and save?
ReplyDeletei guys, I've just tried the method through again and it's still working fie for me. Are you selecting to add new pages as web addresses? It also gives 'blank page' as an option which doesn't work for the method.
DeleteI ma doing the method step by step but it doesn't wprk.. :( Even if I edit the links per page and save it, it always come back as "javascript" on the URL box. :(
ReplyDeleteMaybe you're using a different version of blogger? I've just tried it again and it's fine.
ReplyDeleteHave you just got one 'http://' at the beginning of your link?
Have you tested your link before you try to save it to make sure it's calling up the correct search and it works properly?
If all that has been checked and it still doesn't work I'm afraid I don't know what to advise... I'm certainly no blogger expert! I'm using Chrome on an older windows OS, not Windows 7 or on a smartphone or anything, maybe that makes the difference?
Everything looks ok, but im unable to check it as when i click on one of the menus(pages) it says im denied access as its an invitation only page, but in my settings its says open to anybody??? Thoughts? Have tried everything....
ReplyDeleteIm still trying to get it to work, but now it says on one of my pages that there are no posts with those labels in it, but there definitly is? any other ideas?
ReplyDeleteHi Maria, this sounds like you're doing a different method to what I've recommended above... In the method I use, the page title is the label from your blog post and you give Blogger a web address that is simply a search to find the correct posts. Unless your labels are not the exact same text as you have put in your string e.g. photos vs Photo or something?
ReplyDeleteThis was really helpful. Thanks!
